New Runners – Aug 2013

Early last year I was staring to get into running. I hadn’t entered any races yet, but I had caught the bug and was starting to put in regular training runs. My “normal” run was 5K and my “long” run was 10K. I ran in kilometres back then.

My run frequency increased when my family headed out to Tokyo for four months. I enjoyed updating them with my progress. And on my birthday I got a huge surprise when, on a Skype video call, Junior Mockjogger asked me to look in a special cupboard for a present. And there they were. Bright shiny Mizuno Wave Inspire 8s. Bought completely blind because a 5-year-old thought they looked cool.

I put them on. They fitted like a glove. I went for a run and recorded my first ever sub-30 minute 5K. It was unadulterated passion. My 12-year old Nike Air trainers went in the bin.

Fast forward 700 miles and the Mizunos were running out of steam. But now, the thought of a blind shoe purchase seemed completely crazy, and certainly not the kind of thing a slightly-serious jogger like me should do. So I headed over to Run For It Edinburgh and went through the complete gait/pronation check with their helpful staff, a camera and a treadmill. Somewhat apprehensibly, I waited for them to tell me what an idiot I had been to run in these shoes for so long…..

“You need mild stability support. They’re actually a pretty good match”, they said. “Let’s try out a few alternatives”.

So back on the treadmill I went, with Asics GT 2000s, Saucony Guide 6s and … Mizuno Wave Inspire 9s. The Asics’ didn’t feel right and the camera verified that. The Saucony’s felt good, but not good enough. The Mizuno’s felt like they were painstakingly crafted over several generations just for me.

And so I left the shop with the updated version of the shoes I was given as a blind purchase last year. Only this time it’s Chinese Red / Silver / Lime Punch. Look out for them.

  1. Upgrading from km to miles and plumping for the blingest trainers in the shop? Definite signs of a game being upped!

    Yeah, I’m thinking of re-naming myself slightly-serious-jogger 😉
